Attached as some pics from a monte posi diff with 3.73 gears. How much rust is too much rust? The car is not a show car...Couple questions. 1.) How bad can a diff be rusted before the integrity of the unit is questionable? 2.) Will the guts of this rear fit in a 7.5" rear? I think this 88 Monte is a 7.625 in rear. If the ring gear and pinion and posi locker and everything else will fit into a 7.5 stock84-85 Olds Rear, I have other 7.5 that are not rusted. Just trying to keep things original. 3.) How often are axle bearings/carrier bearings needing replaced? I have no idea of mileage, but the teeth on the ring gear has virually no wear. I spun by hand and inspected visually and cannot find a reason to replace the axle bearings. Carrier bearings are not making any audible noise either. If the seals don't leak I don't plan on replacing those either. 4.) How thick are the axle tube walls? The brackets that hold the brake lines are completely rusted off and I'll need to tack weld on something to replace what is rusted off. Looking for some opinions. THanks.

Everything will swap to the Olds rear. Probably best with that much rust. You can reuse the Monte's bearings if they look good. I would use a solid pinion spacer in place of the crush sleve. Just make sure the pinion depth and back lash are right after the swap.

^^^^^^^^This. 7.5 housings are everywhere and your internals will swap over. I asked the same question once while looking at an 87' 442 and was told by others that the scale would clean up. While it might, it will never look like it is supposed to and you don't have to worry structural integrity. Here's a link
