In the late 80s, my ever-so-frugal father started looking for an alternative drive-train for his '36 Ford pickup. The L79 was tired and the TH350 didn't have enough gears. His search turned up a '78 or '79 Quadrajet carbureted 231 with a turbo and a 5-speed (T-50?). The previous owner pulled it from his wife's car because she didn't like the way the tires would break loose in the snow and replaced it with a N/A 231 and an auto. My dad paid $750 for it and it reportedly only had 15K miles on it. Upon pulling the SBC out and trial fitting the 231 he found that there was interference with the exhaust and the fender. It got stuck in the corner and the 327 went back in. About a year later he decided to sell it so he called several local wrecking yards to see what it was worth in order to price it appropriately. Everyone told him that that combination (231 turbo/5-speed) never existed. They were purchased bolted together and we never separated them and there were no scuff marks on the bellhousing/transmission bolt heads. He ended up selling it to a guy that put it in a Toyota 4X4.
Was this actually a super rare combo or was it really just a leprechaun chariot powered by unicorn piss?
I've seen that the T-50 was an option in late 70s Cutlass. I know that the turbo 231 was a Regal option. Were they ever offered together?
