Hello everybody. I've got a transmission question for anyone who can help. I recently bought an 87 Regal with 49,000 one owner miles on it. The car is mint, never abused and always taken to the dealer for any problems. The owner was in her 90's when she stopped driving it. I bought it on Long Island and drove it 6 hours home to upstate PA. About halfway home I pulled over to use the facilities and when I put the car in reverse I noticed there was about a 5 second delay until it engaged. Over the next few weeks it gradually took longer and longer to engage reverse. It went from 5 seconds to having to rev the engine to get it to catch. Now, I have nothing. No matter how long I wait or how high I rev it, it won't engage. I don't mind replacing the trans if I have to, but I figured I'd ask you guys if you know of the 200-4R having this problem. I remember when I was looking on craigslist for this car that I saw a few Regal adds where the owner stated their car had no reverse. Is there some kind of reverse actuator that I can replace with the trans in the car or is it time to yank it? Any tips to try before pulling the trans would be appreciated. Also, if anyone knows of a set of GNX rims for sale in the upstate PA area, I've got cash. Thanks

Hey welcome to the forum. Unfortunately I'm not a transmission guy but someone should be able to help you. Got any pictures?

How does the car shift when driving? How does the fluid look and what is the level?

Welcome!
Sounds like one of the symptoms of low fluid level, having to rev it up to get it to engage. It very well could've burned up the reverse band in the transmission from being driven low on fluid. Check the fluid level to see if it's low, or if it's dark/burnt smelling. Chances are you'll be pulling your trans out... Or you could just be clever with how you park it so you don't need to use reverse!

My first Regal had the same problem when I bought it. Wasn't long before 1st gear went too. Try throwing in a bottle of Trans-X and making sure the fluid is at the proper level, but chances are you're in need of a rebuild.
