I have a dumb question..... My 81 Calais was in the middle of the previous owners attempt to make a 442 clone out of it and I am trying to take it back to as near stock as I can. They installed a bolt on 442 hood scoop and I want to take it off.... So the question is, do I junk the hood and get a new one, or can the holes be repaired at a reasonable price??? Thanks for your time!

Hit up the junkyards for a good 81-88 2 door hood, would be much easier! IMO. I'm actually going the opposite direction & putting a hurst/olds hood on mine.

its a hurst hood scoop u mean 442's dont have em and didn't use the calais model either

A gentle correction if I understand this correctly.

Your 1981 Cutlass Calais had an 83/84 Hurst/Olds-style hood scoop on it (whether it be a gennie or reproduction scoop). 442s in the 78-88 A/G body era had no such scoop from the factory (and I guess technically, neither did the H/Os in that time frame either as they were added later at the conversion facility). But in any case, you want your stock look back with no scoop and no extra holes.

You COULD get the extra holes filled in, but it would take some good body work skills to ensure you ground out the holes flush so you don't need any bondo. The issue with hoods is that there's some flex when you open/close them with little rigidity to prevent bondo from cracking over time. Not saying it definitely will, but I've seen repaired hoods and after a while you can tell where the repair was. If you can find one cheap enough, buying a junkyard gem is just as cheap or cheaper than filling in the holes.

I believe your answer lies within o.p. In other words, ask him what he wants for the scoop. Mabe even trade hoods also.

Laureen engineering sells them, but they aren't cheap. I found the whole hood off a '84 hurst on Craigslist
