Before I start, I will preface this thread as being one for discussion by those who wish to have a conversation on this technology and is not meant to be purely matter of fact.

Anyhow, this subject came to mind to me tonight while I was taking a drive. Many places around the country have RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) devices that are issued to motorists so that they can be auto billed to a credit card when using toll roads, like Sunpass in Florida. There are also states starting to use RFID chips in driver's licenses as well. However, what I found a little disturbing was the RFID readers lining a local roadway every mile or so. This was NOT a toll road either, so why would the government have installed these devices that could be used to passively track people? The interesting thing about RFID is that the ID chip does not have a connection to a power source until it comes in contact with radio frequency which then acts as the power source. So, theoretically, a driver's license with one of these chips embedded in it could be used to track people as well-even if they did not have the toll pass.

OK, so that is all well and good for tracking a car or a driver's license, but you still have the ability to opt out by not using the pass or having a license right? Yes. That is true. However, these chips are now being implanted into animals and people to track them as well. A company called "Digital Angel" implants these chips into elderly patients who have Alzheimer's disease or Dementia as a way of locating them should they become lost. So, it is possible to use this technology in humans as well. Will it ever go any further? I don't know. What I just posted are the facts I know as of now. Now comes the fun part as we can discuss the possible future implementation of this technology when it comes to a possible move to a cashless society (it IS coming.). Also, think of the other reasons it could be pushed on us. Terrorism, identity theft, etc.

Anyhow, discuss.

Does that have something to do with motorists being taxed for the mileage they drive?

i remember hearing a few years ago about them using RFID's to ticket speeders that they could not otherwise catch. still an outrageous thing to think about.

In Europe, they use them for fast pass at the airport.Regular business flyers and pilots are all chipped in there hand....

**** that!!

In another disturbing story, Great Brittan has decided that they will use license plate recognition technology to track EVERY motorist with closed circuit TV cameras. Big Brother is watching you. I wonder... will they rename the country Oceana too?

(Reference is Orwell's 1984)

The UK sure has the cameras to do that job, without a doubt!

I know that everywhere you go around here there are camera's mounted on top of stop lights. I'd like to know who's watching me pick my nose til the light turns green. And they are the photo enforced photo taking lights. Welcome to 1984... I can only imagine that there will be more camera to watch us in public, not less as the UK pretty much serves as a beta test for whats to come here.

As for RFID tracking on highways, I can imagine it being implemented on some level, or being an expanding federally funded program at least. But as for human implants, as I understand, its supposed to be set up to where the population will want to tracked and traced, for our "safety" of course thus the chip will become a convenience, much like a cell phone.

Welcome to 20 years ago....

GB actually spends 75% of the police budget on cameras mounted around the city.

There crime rates are ALOT lower than ours,ALOT.Less than 1 murder a month...

Here in Alabama,we have approximately 5 million people,England has 60 million,12x the population....12 times smaller but our murder rate is 12x higher than all of England with appraoximately 1 murder a day.

Only person who could argue with those # is an idiot.....

I would rather take the risk than deal with the "safety" of being monitored every moment of my life. Sorry, but the thought of my "benevolent" government knowing all of my movements and actions is something I can live without.

You drank the koolaid didnt you???

There are so many things in your daily life that can/do tell the goverment all that stuff.Your cellphone, the GPS in your car, your IP addy and more....think about all the things that you do every day that are observed in some way.

I know damn well id rather them look at me thru a camera than constantly harrasing innocent people because they look "suspicious" or that they "fit the description" wasting my time....

Actually, I would say it is you that has drank the Kool Aid that the government is a benevolent entity. I do not trust anyone with power as I know from history that power has a tendency to corrupt. We need to limit the power of the government, not give it more. You obviously have never been harassed because you "fit a profile" or "look poor". I have and do not wish to have it happen again. Remember, the more power you give an entity, the more opportunity you give that entity to abuse that power.
