I am looking to start my 350 rocket build up so that I can finally get ride of the boat anchor v6. It is a 71 block with #7 heads and a quadrajet 4 barrel. I am looking to make it a street / strip daily driver and retain the ac and run on pump gas. Possible 400 hp to the wheels. I am unsure as what to do for this. I am not affraid to spend money on the build. Some one please chime in on what componets to use. Also I would like to keep the cast heads and do some work to them. Also what is the biggest cam that I can run with ac. Thanks

good core engine. youll need to port the heads big time. roller cam. high rpm motor. check out this site. realoldspower.com. there is a engine build section. youll see real world dyno # . good reading

Where are you located? It would probably be best to work with a machine shop that specializes in Olds motors. That way you won't be getting a bunch of conflicting info from the machine shop working on your engine and people from here and/or other sites. When you are trying to get this much power out of a 350 Olds, you just need to find a good machine shop and stay with it. Do not start getting advice from a bunch of different people, or it could cost you much more money.

I also can't stress enough that you need a machine shop that knows Olds engines!! They are different than Chevys and take different techniques to make power. If you post your location, me or someone else can tell you a good place to go.

From the info you gave us, you have a good starting point. The block should be fine to use. You may or may not want to get a forged crank. To get that kind of power, any of the older Olds heads will need a lot of work, so you may be fine with them.

Just thought I would throw this out there also. If you would like to use a forged crank, I have one I plan on selling soon. Let me know if interested.

I am located in connecticut. I was thinking about sending the heads to mondello racing for a full port and polish , 3 angle valve job and larger intake valves installed. Like you were saying. I just need to find a reputable machine shop that knows olds motors. If anything I could send the block to either Dick Miller or Mondello.

Stay away from Mondello, they are not a good company anymore. Dick Miller is good but there is also BTR Performance in New York. It is closer to you and he is known as having great service and knowledge, and he is an expert with Olds engines. I am pretty sure his work is more expensive, but from what I heard, it is worth the cost. Here is his site, http://www.btrperformance.com/index.html

Give him a call and I am sure he will help you out.
