I'm ready to figure out what oil I'm going to be using once the break-in period is over on my motor. I've heard a lot of hype behind Royal Purple. It is somehow "hp in a bottle" and there is a noticeable difference from going with a conventional or regular synthetic oil over to Royal Purple.

Then there is Valvolines VR1 Racing Oil. I've seen the stickers on the bottle that say "For High Performance Flat Tappet Motors" which would lead me to believe it has the ZDDP already mixed in. I've never run either oil in any of my vehicles and I don't know what effects and specs each has.

Which is the better oil and what are your experiences with VR1 and Royal Purple?

i cant speak for the paticular valvoline line that your are talking about but in my experience i have never been pleased with valvoline. i have used it in one of my engines which it ended up using like a quart of oil then i switched to mobil 1 and it used no oil at all. i have never really heard anything convincingly negative or positive about valvoline, i just havent liked it in my experiences

Pat,

Do a search of "valvoline vr1 oil". Some eye openning reading and should answer your questions about the Valvoline VR1 oil (especially from the Corvette forum!).

Pat,
Here is the ONLY oil I run and that's Brad Penn oil...It has the zddp (zinc) in it and it's for the flat tappet cams......It runs about $4.50 a quart or so but well worth it!!!!

Can't beat good old Mobil One. It comes as the factory fill in almost every high performance car in the world.
When i worked at the GM Desert Proving grounds that is all they used in all gas engines. I have seen engines overheated to the point of seizing with no bearing or lifter damage.

one of my buddys owns a small oil distributor shop and from what hes heard from customers is that Mobile One works awesome. He highly recommends its over Royal Purple, he say "Royal Purple is just an over-priced oil from all the hype" and the Mobile One does the job and im assuming it does from the the fact the 2 members mentioned it.

yup ever since i switched to mobil 1 i have been a big fan of their oils

i actually just put high mileage mobil 1 10w 30 synthetic on my olds 350 but my dipstick actually snapped in half through the process which was pretty frustrating. ordered a new one which was like 25 from the dealer and it is expected to come in friday, the same day i plan on putting my cutlass on the road (lol of everything this could get held up for a dipstick tube)

Brad Penn is actually the old Kendal GT-1 green oil formula, which I've used for many years before Kendal pulled the plug on production. I've used it on several Porsche engines. Later years, I used the 15/ 50 wt. Mobil 1 in my Chevy and Porsche.
I still use Mobil 1 10/30wt in my Olds Ciera.
I stopped using Mobil 1 in the Chevy and Porsche due to the reduction of ZDDP. I've always been a believer of synthetic oils.
I have also used Amsoil 20/50wt, going from the Kendal GT-1

I've always heard about using conventional oil when breaking in a new engine, and after 1000 miles or so you can switch over to synthetic.

I am running Valvoline VR1 in the Porsche engine right now. Again, due to the higher ZDDP level. I can't say anything positive or negative at this time. I would probably go with Brad Penn after the next oil change.
