The dipstick on my SBO is routed behind exhaust manifold and I was wondering if it can be removed & replaced without removing the manifold? Some time ago when I was replacing the exhaust manifold gaskets, I attempted to replace it with one of those crappy junk chrome ones but could not get it pressed into the block. Argh!!! I wound up reinstalling the broken one back in place. I now have an OEM replacement but don't want to remove the manifold since it is sealed up nice.

Frank it will be tight, although gaskets will give a bit more clearance. You can probably get the old one out but will probably need to at least loosen the manifold bolts for more clearance. How does the quality look on that dipstick?

Hey Christian.

I was afraid of that response - you know how it is, once you get something buttoned up nice it sucks to take it apart. Ha! Anywho, the new OEM dipstick tube is really nice & has a yellow T handle on the dipstick itself.

I may pick up a couple to replace the loose fitting chrome ones. I always break the dip stick putting in headers. You may get lucky and actually not have leaks just loosening and retorqing the manifold.

I finally got around to installing my dipstick tube! I wound up unbolting the manifold from the head, cleaning the surface, installing gasket with ultra copper, installing the dipstick, and re-tourquing the manifold. It's sealed up nice again! Pretty sad that it took me this long to get it done - no time at all these days.

It is possible to reuse the dipstick in a SBO.. With this in mind; why not just remove the dipstick before installing the headers and the reinstall after the headers are in place? I'm thinking that if you have a track car with headers that you should also anchor the dipstick tube somehow and not just let it free float.

I will try that when I do my W31 wannabe head swap later this month. I don't like it free floating either Frank. If it works the Olds 4x4 will also get it done.
