Shifter question

How do you swap out the plastic insert in the shifter shaft? The one in my shifter is broken and can seem to get it out to replace. (shifter is out of the car if it matters)

Could you post a pic of it? I'm trying to picture it. My shifter is in the car buried under the console, so I can't see what you're talking about.

IIRC it comes out from the bottom. There's a spring or something that attaches to the detent that locks it in each slot.... its been a while so I may not remember this right. My parts book doesn't show this clearly at all.

Yes, there is a spring.
I was thinking from the bottom, it wont pull from the top like Monte and F-body shifters. Does anyone make a replacement piece?

Longroof, this is the plastic insert that the handle/button engages if that helps.
