Hi, I would like to fit a B&M shifter in my column change 78 Regal. Is there any problems I would face? Do any of you guys have any pics of a shifter fitted in your cars?

Thanks
Mark

RE: Regal Shifter

😀 Hi Mark--It's good to see that a G-body is still around in England.I was stationed there at RAF Chicksands, Bedfordshire in 1963-1966. I think that I heard that it was closed . I learned to fly there at a small airport near Luton-I can't remember the name of it though. Learned in a Gypsy Moth Bi-plane--LOVED IT!!!
OK--on to your Regal-- Do u have bucket seats, or bench?? Either way it's not too big of a job. If u have a bench seat, just position the shifter at a comfortable spot in front of seat, and mark your carpet where u want it positioned. You can cut a slit in the carpet, and pry away enough to slip the lower part of shifter on to the floorpan. You might need someone else to hold carpet back--and mark the floor mount holes, and drill the 4 holes. You will also have to drill out a fairly good sized hole in front of that to slide the cable through. The instructions will show u how to assemble the linkage part.
You might want to hook up the neutral start switch too--so you don't have a startup in gear. There is a connector on the lower part of steering column that has 2 wires in a connector(I think a green, and a white)--and u will have to make up a short extension to run these wires to your shifter switch.
I have just installed one in my Regal, so I'll take a few pics for u tomorrow. I don't have my console installed yet, so you can see what mine looks like. I am going to mount my console in, and have modified the top plate to accommodate the shifter boot. I want it to look like it was factory installed. I'll drop a line tomorrow--Good luck--Dean

b&m pro ratchet shifter, hammer shifer t-handle, VERY easy to install all you gotta do is pull back the carpet, mount it figure where you want it, make the marks drill 4 holes nad the bigger hole for the cable bolt it all up, then go under and do the cable linkgage, very easy to follow intructions with b&m! car was a colum shift orginaly.

Thanks guys mine has a bench seat.

Dean I live about 1 or 2hr drive away from from where you were based. I will tell you something that may surprise you if you remember your time here......................................................................................................... ..............................................................................................................
..................................................................its not raining today

RE: Regal Shifter

 Hi again Mark--YOUR KIDDING!!!! NO RAIN--how in the hell did that happen?? I remember the day I arrived--and the day I left--and it rained both times. HA HA!! I do remember that I had a 56 Chevy Bel-Air coupe with a 6 in it, and had a Norton 750 to scoot around on, because I DO remember that gas was a little over $3.00(U.S.)- or about 1pound,2 shillings, back then.I think the pound was about $2.70 U.S. I know that it rained about 4-5 days a week, back then, and I was always in a rubber rainsuit, and boots on the Norton.
Well- I didn't get a pic today, but will get it tomorrow, and send it to u. I hope you have the general idea on installation. It's fairly easy, as you can see from Gbody Fevers installation.Nice job!! Keep in touch, and let us know how u make out, Good Luck , Dean

I have a B&M Mega Shifter in my 80" Olds Cutlass Calais. The Mega Shifter is designed for 3 or 4 speed tranz. I plan on an upgrade to a TH2004R after I get the 8.5" GN rear in with the much lower than stock 3.42 gearset.
The only real pain with the aftermarket shifters from both B&M and Hurst is they both come STD. with a cable that is at least two to three times longer than the stock GM unit for factory console cars. I called B&M Tech about this and they said this is so there are no sharp bends to bind up the cable. I used a "F" body cable for a while but it lacks adjustment. The extra long universal cable supplied ends up wrapped around your tranz and IMHO looks like hell. I put rubber tubing over mine for extra protection as it barely clears the collectors on my headers. I plan on having a aircraft shop make me up a short factory type cable with a threaded adjuster. BTW B&M sells a "console" version too.

Dean: It rains here 365 days a year and then in the summer we get a hose pipe ban!!!

If you can post a pic that would be great.

Lawfree: Thanks for the info. Why are you swapping the trans when you go to 3.42's?? I have 3.42's in mine with a TH200 and it seems ok.

Mabey these will help they arent teh best of the shifter, but they are all i had, i do have a bench seat. and this is in a 1980 monte carlo. it went in very easily, all i had to do was take out the ask tray underneath.

uk,

You may also want to try the "truck" Mega-shifter as this has a taller base than the standard Mega-shifter. Since you have a bench this may work out a little better if you're planning on use the ratcheting of the shifter. The reach may be a little less than the standard Mega-shifter.

I'm using a regular mega-shifter in the stock console.
