my friend crashed his 84 grand prix le 305 v8 and i can buy the complete car for 300 cash engine and transmission still good. i have a 83 cutlass 3.8 v6. i did want a 350 but i dont have that kind of cash. i have $700 to spend and i can use $400 on mods to the 305. whats the stock hp for the 305 and what should i buy for the 305 with the extra 400 i'll have.

350 swap

I would save up a few extra hundred and go ahead and drop a 350 in it. You can find new, not rebuilt crate motors from different engine suppliers like Scoggins Dickey and others. I have 2 1984 cutlasses that I plan to put different engines in. A 350 in one and a 454 in the other.

While a 350 is preferable, if you know the condition and history of the 305 is good and the price is right, it will be way better than the V6. The bonus is you get a parts car that has all of the parts you need to convert from the V6 to the Chevy V8. That will save you a ton of time and probably a few hundred dollars. Several of the car mags have done pretty decent 305 build ups recently and gotten good power.

I would do a Edelbrock Performer Cam and Intake along with a 600 CFM Carb. But since your in California, better check the emissions law first.

160HP for the GP sounds right. i know its small, but with the right gears can be torquey enough.
Me? I'd buy th car. Sell off anything u don't need or want from it, swap the engine trans and rear end if gear ratio is any better than your current one. Prob is. No mods, pocket the money and get it running in your car first. After its all back together and emissions compliant is when I'd worry about the spare money. Swap the entire engine, trans, crossmember, rear axle, radiator, new motor mounts, and u will be in good shaoe. Exhaust, too. After everything is finished see what u have left and consider Hooker Emission headers, Edelbrock Performer Intake, and an emissions friendly cam.
