Hey everyone -
So I've made a custom instrument cluster for some gauges and wanted to get your opinions on if I should go with silver (Ultralite) or black (Sport comp) Autometer gauges. I really like the silver gauges but had second thoughts - I think the black may look better with it. I'm using the stock regal instrument trim (wood grain) with it...just wanted to see what you all thought. I know ultimately it's up to me, but it's still early enough I won't be out too much after buying everything then going with something else. The Z series gauge is just for reference, if I go black I'll go with Sport Comp series guages. Thanks, sorry for the crappy cell phone pic....

If there was any way you could replicate the wood grain texture on the black gauge trim, that would look really awesome and have a stock look.
First I think the black gauges will look best with you current set up and if you keep it the same way you could find some woodgrain vinyl if you like the look.

The first time I made my dash insert I used one piece of lexan and glued it to the dash and found some woodgrain vinyl in
an attempt to match the rest of the dash, I already had the steering wheel in place.

Later I decided to redo the dash so I sourced another dash piece and made removeable aluminum inserts to fit the dash so I
had easy access to wiring and lightbulbs without having to pull the whole dash piece off.
I also decided to give it a more modern look with the black which also required a new steering wheel.

I voted for black. Silver stands out way too much IMO and black just looks good 8)

Thanks for the replies - I think the black will look much better too, glad I came to my senses before I had more gauges bought. I think I'll stick with the black trim - I believe it's 3M now that makes faux wood grain vinyl wrap you can cut to whatever shape you need, but I'm not going to go so far as to trim the gauges.

565 thanks for the input & pics- my plan is to get a multi-connector to hook up all the electrical wires to so I can just plug 'n play with the wiring, so if I need to remove it I can (and make it a whole lot easier to remove/install).

I'll have some more pics as it comes along...for now still sourcing parts while I get it running... :blam:

check out the sport comp II. better lighting and I think youll get what your looking for.
