Been looking into doing a single shot exhaust on my 81 Malibu wagon. found 2 different 3" kits. one from gbodyparts.com, the other from seturbo.com. 1 4" kit from gn1performance.com

I ordered the 3" kit with no muffler from seturbo for 246 shipped. was told 2-3 weeks. it is now week six and still no eta on receiving it. about to cancel order.

called gbodyparts about their aluminized kit awhile back. told $350 plus shipping no muffler. tried calling Tuesday to find out exactly what muffler is offered with the $450 kit. still no answer on that . girl keeps saying the guy never gave her an answer.

the gn1 kit is full 4", complete stainless with muffler for 549 plus shipping.

question is how much would the single 4" hurt the performance on a sbc 350 with about 9:1 or 9.25:1 compression with a light mild cam?

trying to stay away from a dual exhaust if at all possible.

I think I would be more worried about the fit of a 4" exhaust than performance loss, that is a huge pipe to try to fit under these cars

I wouldn't even consider a 4" exhaust. Then again, I would never consider a single exhaust system either....

here is the pic off of the gn1 site. my car will not be lowered so that will be one less headache.

It doesn't look like a bad fit, of course every exhaust looks like it fits with the axle housing hanging on the shocks. Why are you so against a true dual exhaust? For the price of that 4" system you could almost have the dual header back kit and the crossmember, the Pypes dual side exit kit is $380 in Summit # SGG10S, makes for a much nicer system and a better performing exhaust IMO, but I guess if you choose that kit in theory it would be the same as a dual 2" as far as pipe volume.

I don't think it would hurt performance at all
The new GM pickups are pushing over 400hp with a 3.5 exhaust
Bringing the 2 pipes together has been proven to increase power as with an x-pipe with the scavenging effect.
Bringing them apart again just makes it look and sound better.
The cross section area of single 4" is 12.56 sqin.
dual 2.5" is 9.81"sqin.
With a mild motor like you have you would be better of with a 3.5" system to keep the exhaust velocity higher and take advantage of the scavenging effect.
For a street car it would be fine. Good for low and mid range torque which where you are 99% of the time.
Unless you drive WOT everywhere.. 😀
