Dumb question.

I have an 85 GP with a 305HO.

What would happen if I were to remove the belt from the smog pump?

I mean, aside from violating several state and federal laws regarding emissions. Would it be bad for the engine or components?

Thanks.

nope. all it does is pump oxygen into the cat in order to built up heat and efficiency.

I ask because it's been making some angry noises... kind of like it doesn't want to spin. I have no idea how old it is, but chances are it's at least ten years old. I was trying to conjure an easy workaround to it until I can get around to replacing it.

So removing the belt would not be bad, then? I'll probably do that later, in that case.

In CA, I used to take them apart and then gut the pump. That way, the smog guy thinks it's there. Usually there are lots of worn out vanes inside making the noise.

my brther took his off from his 4.3 and nothing happen..he also took off the cat. converter..I blame him for global warming.

Hahah... that's what most of my friends say to me, before I inform them that, actually, my car passed emissions with better marks than most of their four cylinders do.

I was going to leave the pump actually on the engine -- I want to be able to reconnect it if need be -- but just remove the belt. I already removed the AC belt and entire compressor, but I want to leave the smog pump there so that I can always go back to my environmentally-friendly ways if I wanted to. Just for now, I'd like to give it a shot without having to spin the thing.

yeah thats wut he did..first he took off the belt and drove for a couple days...and he noticed nothing went wrong. so he took it off..

Welp... smog pump is disconnected. I notice no difference in performance, other than that the sound of an angry, busted smog pump is not interfering with my hearing the rest of the engine.

Thanks!

remove the smog pump totally off. that should save you maybe 5 to 15
pounds of weight off of car which should equal maybe a fraction of a tenth of gas lol you have more space to work in your car. sell it to the scrap yard as junk

Heheheh. Actually, my primary motivation for disconnecting it is because it's loud, like a giant, unlubricated hamster wheel, and I've been trying to diagnose another problem with the engine and can't hear over the thing. Once I figure out the main issue, I'll probably end up getting a new smog pump and replacing this old one. I like to keep things, er, at least moderately up to spec. Heh.
