I am making all new sound deadener mats for my Cutlass and do not know what glue to use to attach them. The mats I am making are the rebonded cloth scraps type that is used for sound absorption, not the rubber pieces used for vibration attentuation and sealing holes. The factory glue looks to be some sort of yellow stuff that was sprayed on the mats and then attached to the car. Any ideas as to what to use?

Have you thought about 3M weatherstripping adhesive?

The last time I used some it was yellow and gooey like what you are describing.

I was thinking about it, but was also open to other options. I have the 3M black weatherstripping adhesive already, but did not know if it was my best choice.

Don't use weatherstrip adhesive, it's not intended to hold weight like that, and will fail.

Use the spray stuff from my above post, you'll be glad you did, and you'll be able to find a ton of other uses for it.

It's perfect for headliner material.

Blake is right. The 3M Super trim adhesive is some strong sh*t. I highly recommend it. I've used it to glue down vinyl top sail panel sections..and also used it for the sound deadening material on the floor of my wagon.

Also. a good contact cement should work well with sound deadening material.

3M weatherstrip adhesive comes in tube form, not spray can.

I know the weatherstrip stuff comes in a tube. As for the 3M stuff, I am going to try and get some tomorrow, but have no clue where to buy it locally. What kind of store usually sells it? Would an autobody supply store have it?

An autobody supplier will definately have it, and I'd be willing to bet most parts stores carry it as well... I've seen it at my neighborhood CarQuest.

Thanks. I will try that tomorrow. As a side note, I was going to finish wiring the amps for my stereo right now (3am), but of course, a thunderstorm just popped up and I can't do anything! It's either too hot during the day, or storming....

If your looking for something that is very similar to factory and has a super strong grip that is still flexible you could use 3m's 1300L. It is a yellow neoprene type adhesive and it works great for trim and upholstery and the nice thing is if you stick some thing down and have to reposistion it or get bubbles out you can reactivate it with toulene as long as the toulene doesnt eat the substrate or working with 🙂
