Ok, I swapped the trans in my 84 Regal from a 700r4 to a th350. The thing runs great, shifts perfectly, but the speedo is completely inoperative. I noticed before the swap that the speedo was bouncy, but figured I would clean up the cable after I got the trans switched over.
I have a driven and a drive gear in there, supplied by the trans rebuilder. The threads in both are fine. The little bullet adapter that holds the gear was all the way into the tail housing. I checked the union between the upper and lower cables and it was spinning around a bit (not snugged down all the way) so I tightened that up.
How much play should there be in the speedo cable when you pull and push on the inner shaft at the trans end? Mine moves up and down inside the outer sheath about a good 1/4". Is that normal?
Also, when the inner shaft is pushed up into the cable housing, the end of that inner shaft (that inserts into the driven gear) is flush with the end of the metal piece that screws onto the bullet type adapter.
When I turn the speedo cable with my fingers, the speedo registers it and moves the indicator in the dash. So, the issue should be at the trans.
Should there be so much play in the inner cable? How much should protrude from the end of the cable when you pull and push on the inner cable?
I'm 95% sure that the drive and driven gears are ok. I'm thinking that either the shaft is broken/too short or maybe the upper speedo cable is loose? Does that end thread on?
