I picked up an 8.5 for 100 bucks! is a spool a bad idea for something that will be a weekend driver, on the street?

Yea, bad idea. Spools keep the wheels locked so they turn the same speed all the time, great for drag racing, but not on the street as you need the inside wheel to turn slower than the outside in a turn. Get a posi 4 it.

I know quite a few people that run/have run spools on the street with no problems, though it is a bit of a risk. It's hard on your tires, and some upgraded axles would be a good idea to accompany it.

Just be careful with your turns, especially when trying to park.
And NO U-TURNS!

spools

Yep aftermarket axles should be a must and full spool obviously requires c-clkip emil kit to retain the axles in the housing. Jim

but if you go with a limited slip differential you'll have the benefits of both types, open and spool.

I ran a mini-spool in my pickup for a little while. I got tired of it before I did any noticeable damage. It was in a Ford 8' and I had to throw it in temporarily while looking for a replacement for the one I'd blown up. If you have strong arms and don't mind wearing out your tires -- give it a shot.
