im setting up an ignition kill switch for my 86 cutlass. i took the panel under my steering column off and exposed a few wires but i can figure out which one is the ignition switch wire. does anyone know what color the wire is?

why do you need a ignition kill switch for on a olds 307???

Maybe because it helps deter theft? 😉

Its a large purple wire coming from a blue plug on top of the steering column. This is the wire that passes through the firewall bulkhead connector and down to the starter itself.

so technically if i splice that and insert a switch it should deter some punk theif from startin tha car by peeling the column

Yes. However you really should use a relay and a switch, this way you don't need a HUGE switch to handle the current through that wire.

http://www.the12volt.com/ has a lot of good wiring schematics.

Specifically, a section on kill switches:

Look at the Passive Starter Kill diagrams. I like the one they have that uses your aftermarket stereo faceplate. When its detached, it kills the ignition.

As a side note, if you ever add a manual transmission to a G-body, this is also the same wire you splice into to hook up the neutral safety switch.

Technically, nothing prevents a theft. If they want your car bad enough, they'll get it one way or another.

Yeah if some guy wants it bad enough they will get it but I just want a reasonably cheap deterrent in conjunction with my piss poor alarm my friend bought me from autozone. It will at least give me enough time to call the cops or get the theif with my bat.
