Steering Wheel Removal

I'm looking for some help. I have a 1979 Pontiac Grandprix SJ. It has a custom/sport steering wheel.
The service manual says to remove the ornament in the center of the steering wheel to access the retaining nut.
I am having a problem popping off the ornament. afraid of damaging it.
is there a trick to getting it off?

This guy says just grab and pull. The whole cover comes off, not just the center.

The steering wheel in the picture is from an oldsmobile. the steering wheel & removal process is different then the Pontiac custom/sport wheel.

(3) 7mm or 9/32" screws on the back of the center spokes- 1 on each bar
