I need to get a new sending unit. and I need to find out if I have the 22 or 18 gallon tank. the el camino originally came with the v6 motor. would it be the 18 gallon tank ? was the larger tank an option ? or does it really mater witch sender I get? any difference in senders ?

anybody. I guess i'll put the tank in the back of the pickup go to the gas station and see how many gallons it takes. then i'll know. I think

I didnt think any gbodies came with a 22 gallon tank. I read somewhere they were all 18.1 gallons. I could be wrong though.

Ive been trying to figure it out aswell. The elcamino store says

To find out if a 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 El Camino has a 17 or 22 gallon tank, check the option sticker located in the glove box. A 22 gallon equipped El Camino will be listed with N23 option. A17 gallon car will not list a code as it is considered standard equipment. If the sticker is damaged or lost, the only other way to tell the difference is to fill an empty tank and count how many gallons it takes. Since 22 & 17 gallon tanks share the same outside dimension, simply measuring the outside of the tank will not show the actual inside capacity.

I dont have the stock dash so looks like we'll both just have to fill it and check

I bought one of those fluid transfer pumps.(ebay $15.99) so when my pickup gets about empty, i'll toss the tank in the back and head to the station, fill it up, then transfer most of it back into my pick up. who wants to install a tank with fuel in it ? then i'll know witch sender to get.

well I checked it, and it holds 22 gallons. that battery operated fluid transfer pump works slick. the best price I could find on fuel sender was $70 from 'the parts place; thru ebay
