subwoofer box 81 malibu

I wouldn't suggest "hanging" a sub box in a car. either use free air subs or mount them in a box. Many find it hard to believe, but subs normally sound better NOT firing directly into the cabin.

Uh no.

If the box is built correctly it will sound great, if he built a blow through he could even reduce the rattle as well.

If you build a box that can be moved around in your trunk you can see for yourself what position is best. I have done many stereo installs, and cars with trunks are always the same. You want the sub(s) pointing towards the back.

Now there are exceptions of course. In a (proper) bandpass box, the direction won't make any difference. And if the system is some over the top set up with more than 2 subs and thousands of watts, you just wanna make it fit.

But for the average system, 1 or 2 subs facing back is the best bang for the buck you're gonna get.

Uh, yes. You can manipulate the bass wave for optimal sound. Ever face woofers towards the trunk instead of into the cab? It's good for a db gain if that's what your looking for.

Here's a link to a site with some car audio basics; box types, characteristics, etc.

i got 2 fifteens in my 81 malibu and had to cut the bottom back of the box at an angle for it to fit.i really need to build a custom box to use the area under the 6x9s for air space. there is a guy on you tube that built one for 2-12s like that for a cutlass and its the same trunk.

Whatever you say buddy, I know how some car audio folks get. So I'm not gonna sit here and argue with you all day.

I have witnessed first hand, a properly built box blown through into the cabin will sound better then having a basic box with subs facing the rear.

But also a box built in the trunk that goes up and over the sloped area up against the back seat with the subs facing towards the rear of the car, with a port that goes up and through the rear deck also sounds great.

A basic pre-fab box tossed into the trunk with the subs facing the rear doesn't sound all that great to me. IMO

Get yourself two nice 10's or 12's and you will be more then happy. It doesn't take much power or cone area at all to get a g-body loud. You don't need 15's or 30+ subs in the trunk to get loud.

Check my cardomain page. I have a custom box I built for four 12's in my 86 Cutlass. It sit on the hump and takes up the entire area under the rear deck.
