My 87 EC with 305 and AT makes no strange noises at cold start, but when I drive it away before its warmed up it has a knocking sound. It quits after very short time. Would a cracked flexplate make noise cold and then quit after driving? Id think it would b making a noise all the time. :?

yes it would make a noise pretty much all the time, especially when it gets hot. It will make a sort of "clicking" noise or "tapping" noise. It may be the oil hasn't gone all the way up to the cylinders yet? It would make a knocking sound for a few seconds then go away. How long do you let your car warm up? You should let it warm up at least a few minutes before driving.
