MONTE CARLO Tach not working on ls1 swap

I bought an auto meter tach (p/n 2300) for my 1988 monte ss (02 ls1/4l60 swap) and wiring it up to the white tach signal wire coming out of the harness it doesn’t work, do I need one of these converters and to wire it up to the coils?

Or am I just hooking it up wrong? I can get the tach to turn on so I know it’s working just no rpm signal
