hi there
i do have a 80 olds cutlass cruiser that is original diesel car, i changed the engine to a 305 sbc, everything works fine exept the tachomeeter, any ideas for what i have to do to get it fixed?

Erik

well, i think on the Diesel the tech works a little differently. Make sure the TACH port (negative side of the Distributer) has a wire that goes into the passenger compartment to the Tachometer. Also make sure the Jumper 6/8 is on 8 and maybe solder it so it stays put.

hi there
all this is done, but i think maybe the diesel tach is different from gasoline?

you might be right, since I do not think the motor had a "distributer" of any kind, but a vacuum pump where the distributer would be. Right?

hi
yes thats right, the diesel engine has a vacumpump where the distributor is on the gasoline engine, and the tach is wired into the alternator on the diesel engine and on the distributor on the gasoline engine

According to my 80 service manual...

There is a white .8 wire from the Generator to the Cluster. In the line there is a C323 with the symbol ">>" over the wire. Is that a resistor?

Once to the TACH it grounds to a 8 Black and then 3 black wire.

On the H engine (305) R and others the white wire comes directly off the distributer but there is an additional ">>" with the numbers C480 next to it along the wire on its way to the TACH

It sounds like the problem is in the TACH itself? Check to be sure the prongs on the circuit board on back are making contact with the printed board. Solder them down tight?

hi there
this tacho worked fine with the diesel engine in, when i had that it was only one cabel to the alternator (red) i tried to hook that up in the tacho input on the distributor but it not working, i have checed everything, but it possible that it have to be hooked up elsewhere with the petrol engine, do you have pics?
