There is a white .8 wire from the Generator to the Cluster. In the line there is a C323 with the symbol ">>" over the wire. Is that a resistor?
Once to the TACH it grounds to a 8 Black and then 3 black wire.
On the H engine (305) R and others the white wire comes directly off the distributer but there is an additional ">>" with the numbers C480 next to it along the wire on its way to the TACH
It sounds like the problem is in the TACH itself? Check to be sure the prongs on the circuit board on back are making contact with the printed board. Solder them down tight?
