Temperature Sending Unit Help!

Hey all -

I'm trying to find out where my temp sending unit is in engine - my temp gauge is not reading anything - needle is all the way to the right, so i think its shot. Someone on this site said this can effect my idle possibly (my idle is way high and its computer controlled, so...) now i gotta fix my temp gauge and hopefully fix the idle too. My chilton's manual says: replace temp sending unit for this problem - but it doesn't say where the friggin' thing is! Please help! Everytime i shift into gear it sounds like i'm gonna drop the transmission. Thanks all!
Oh yeah, engine etc:
1983 olds cutlass calais
v6 3.8 (yeah, I know, when my job starts paying i'll drop in v8)
gauge cluster w/ tach, speedo, amp, oil press, temp, idiot lights on right
thanks!

The Coolant Temp Switch(1Prong connector) on my 87 GP with the 3.8 is under the Alternator in the intake manifold. The Coolant Temp sensor(2 Prong connector) was in the intake manifold under the termostat housing. The switch was for the Rally Gauge and the sensor went to the computer for fuel mixture adjustments or something...

I have two sensors in my thermostat housing, one for coolant temp and the other, who knows. I ripped my ECM out and wiried my temp up directly. I got the ECM one by mistake and it is 50 degrees hot. I had the same problm before the ECM went but could never find the solution, nor could two mechanics.

if it was at zero then the plug would be disconnected, but pegged all the way up means theres no ground.
