I have an 1987 Monte Carlo LS with the 4.3 TBI. I need to set the base timing and have been given allot of different advice on how to do this for this engine. Can someone who has experience with this please post what needs to be done?
- Is this vacuum or electronically advanced? Is it a wire or hose that will need to be disconnected?
- Is 0 degrees the correct amount of timing for this year?
- What size is the bolt under the distributor?

A 92 350 tbi, you unplug a wire by the distributor then time it to 0 degrees, then plug wire back in. That is what I would try, then drive it and see how it runs. Not sure if a 4.3 is timed different from a 350 or not though.

iirc, i believe there is a procedure on how to set the timing on the emission sticker on the engine fan shroud. 87 4.3l tbi should be all electronic. no vacuum hoses hook up to distributor. but i don't remember if there is a single wire connector that is disconnected, it would stick out of the wire loom on the passenger side of the eng, or if you need to do something else. sorry, its been 30 years. but the basics are a fully warmed up engine, a/c (if equipped) turned off, trans is park.

I actually still have the emissions sticker on the fan shroud. Unfortunately part of the right side of it is missing and the rest is no-longer legible. Mostly I am looking to confirm is 0 is the proper starting point or not for this motor.

i tried searching for your info, no luck. if no members here have a 1987 service manual to look it up in, then i would try over on the montecarlossforum.com site
