What kind of hp numbers are possible out of a "hot air" turbo v6 (85 t type)? how much more powerful are the intercooled turbos compared to these? Im asking because im looking at an 85 to possibly buy

Well the 85 from factory was rated at 200hp
The 86-87 intercooled rated at 245hp

The 85 can be modied to make more horsepower but it will require more work to meet up with the intercooled version. You can always do the 86 swap on the 85 it will run you alot of $$$$ to do it but well worth it. For the price of what the 86-87 model yrs are going for now you could probably score a nice one for around 7-8k. On another note the 85 will still be quick and fun to drive if the price is right.

I guess the best answer is it depends on what type of fuel you are useing. Race gas or a Xylene blend or an additional water/alcohol/methanol injection system can take the place of or be used in addition to an intercooler for detonation resistance. The more detonation resistance the more boost you can run or power you can make without damaging your motor. Generally a hot air car can be set up to run as fast as 12.90s very cost effectively or before spending any real money for motor parts turbos etc assuming you are starting with a healthy stockish car so to speak. Horsepower numbers are not hugh but torque is so high they often break a posi loose from a 20 mph roll. 8)

Mandatory to turn up the wick for these cars are;
A scan tool such as scanmaster. You cannot fly in the blind with these cars like you can playing with a naturally aspirated car. If you don't you will go slower than you should and damage especially motor parts. Like head gaskets. Adjust things to stay in the zone and you can go ridiculous fast for cheap compared to a naturally aspirated car. Without a scantool you have no idea where zone is.
A good fuel pump with the most voltage you get to it and good grounds.
Find and fix vaccum leaks.
An adjustable fuel pressure regulator
A threaded wastegate rod or someway of turning up the boost.
A boost guage

Cost to power & reliablity parts would be an intercooler, methanol injection, an aftermarket downpipe. A methanol injection setup was the single best upgrade I ever made to my GN. With intercooler I do 24 psi boost on 93 octane. 😀

You can drive these cars fast enough to normally easily stay with traffic without useing your turbo. When I do so I get about 20 mpg as a 60/40 hwy mix and 22 hwy at 75ish. Not bad at all for a AC cruise control 12 second street car.
