what is the tallest valve cover that will fit on a small block in an 81 Malibu with a/c? don't want to purchase covers that I can not get on. my concerns is the front driver side near a/c brackets and the rear passenger corner with the a/c box.

I wouldn't worry too much, I have a sbc 350 in my 84 cutlass w/ a/c & heat. I had the tall proform shitty chrome valve covers with miles of clearance. I have since put on the huge proform slant-edge tall valve covers on it, the GM licensed ones...when my friend the engine builder saw them called them houses. cool. that is what I wanted to hear. I just remember my dad having an issue getting old style m/t valve covers to fit his 79 Malibu but could not remember why. thank you for the help.
