Hi I have a 1980 monte carlo. I tested the battery with a voltmeter and it reads 12.4v, but when I turn the key in the car to battery on position the voltmeter gauge in the dash shows 8volts. I know the gauge is ok. What can be causing this?

Is this the stock gauge in the dash or aftermarket?
What does the gauge read when the car is running?

hi, the gauge is stock. The car has not run in 6 months no spark issue condition, but when it did 13 or 14v

Check your battery clamps are tight and not corroded. If you can get into the battery, check the fluid level - typically there is a 'collar' down to the acid level and the liquid will make a little upward 'dimple' once it is just above the end of the collar (full). Use only distilled water if you need to top off. A dixie cup with a pinched edge to make a pour spout works well for me.
12.6 volts is what a fully-charged good battery reads. 13.8 volts +/- is what a stock charging system reads when it is working properly. Take it to Autozone, etc. and ask them to check your charging system. They do it for free in hopes of selling you a battery or alternator. No guilt if you choose a slow time in their store.
