So I am swapping a custom built motor into my 442, it’s a ram jet crate long block that I installed a holley stealth ram onto and am running a 86-89 TPI computer and harness with the factory 200 4r. so I have been trying to finish up reworking my harness and I ran across aomething that I had not addressed earlier before. I have overdrive so it would be ideal for me to operate the over drive off of the TPI computer but it needs to have a VSS/vehicle speed sensor for that to work. there are options as far as hooking one into the transmission but I got to thinking after seeing photos of the sensors being on the back of the speedometers. Correct me if I am wrong but doesn’t most g bodies already have a VSS installed to the gauge cluster for cruise control and computer use?

You should consult w/ a Holley expert to get the right VSS but you could try the LT-1 VSS from advanced b/c its really cheap and if it doesnt work out just return the part. It's not very expensive, you can hardwire it into the system. You could take the whole wires from roadmaster separately and see if the vss works. The holley stealth ram will probably throw off the numbers a little bit but it can pass inspection if the inspector is not paying attention

the only thing holley on her is the manifold and throttle body.... its not their computer. the lt1 doesn't have the correct speed sensor from what I am reading, I think its a 4x signal and the tpi needs a 2x which from what I am reading is what is stock on a g body. I guess that is one good thing that I get from using the older efi setup 🙂 and I don't have to pass inspection so that is no worry at all

The speed sensor on the back of the speedo will work. You just gotta figure out how to hook it up. I am doing the same thing and haven't made it that far. 2000 pulse per mile is what the maf computer needs for a signal and that is the signal that the vss in our cars generates.
