Southern IL
Hello to all. I am looking to upgrade my existing 307 to either a 350 or higher. I browse thru different sites looking for some but no luck. My question to you all, who has an engine/transmission they are willing to part away with. I am looking for a direct bolt on to my 86 cutlass supreme. I live in sounthern IL. I am not looking to spend alot of money. I am wanting to do a project with my boys. Most of my money goes towards my wife and kids... My car has been neglected for a while now and I am earger to get it back on the road and drive it again. Thank you all and look forward in seeing the comments. Hopefully I put this on the right place.

DIRECT bolt in would be an olds 350, 403, or 455 with some mods. Of course you'd need headers/exhaust manifolds for the 403 and 455, i think the 350 and 307 use the same manifolds, but I could be wrong. Your location says southern IL, so here's this lil gem I found. Beauty. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/pts/5440237344.html Might be too pricey though, but that's about however much it costs to do a basic rebuild with a few go fast goodies.

Forgot to add, you can always add some go fast parts to the 307. They can be pretty stout, and there are recipes to get it in a stock cutlass into the mid 13s. BUt that also requires beefing up the rear end/new gears and a shift kit for the trans or a TH350 swap if you have a 200 metric (three speed auto).

Hmmm. Mid 13's in a stock Cutlass means you would need at least 350 hp. While this has been done by experienced engine builders they have not been low budget. The OP is on a limited budget and If he is starting from scratch and going to "add go fast parts" on an engine, an 307 Olds is not the best bang for the buck. The same would apply to a Chevy 305. Why do it?

403. Readily available and you can upgrade later with a set of early 350 heads (5, 6, or 7) as your finances allow. External dimensions are the same as all other SBOs so all the accessories and brackets will swap over.

Yep, can definitely been done. And like you said, same with the 305 and the chevy 307. There's no real reason to do it at all.

If the 403 can take on all the external 307 accessories, that's probably the best low-buck alternative. If the transmission is a 200-4R, you could consider swapping a complete Chevy with all accessories, but if you still need to pass smog, that's a lot of changes to manage.

Chevy would need different motor and frame mounts, wiring, and fuel line routing. Not hard to do, but cost effective. There's about 100 SBC per square foot so those are easy to find and hop up. But a 403/350 would pop right in. All the accessories will bolt on, with the exception of the smog stuff for the pre '73 or so olds 350s.

I'd stay with the 403 idea. Keep looking out for a good running one still in the car - don't buy a boat anchor and then pour money into making it what you thought it was going to be...don't pour money into the car that you'll never see again. Remember: 40 cents on the dollar when trying to sell it...
