Hey everyone. I'm switching from Saginaw with Hurst to Muncie with Hurst on 78 Malibu with factory 4 speed. What modifications do I have to do? I was told that I would have to relocate the opening. Is that true? I was also told that I can modify shifter linkage from Saginaw Hurst to use on Muncie in the factory location.

Please help.

First off, which muncie?? If it's anything other than the M22 i'd reconsider the transmission before you put it in, but your in the right direction, in my opinion.

It was a factory saginaw 4 speed and we put in a Muncie M-21. So we had to relocate the whole for the shifter. We went to the junk yard and cut out a floor section and patched it in to fill in for the saginaw hole. I went ahead and bought the linkage for the muncie transmission. EX: my transmission was out of a 68 Chevelle so I bought the shifter linkage for a 68 Chevelle. We also installed a 12 bolt rear end and used the factory driveshaft for the saginaw transmission, we just had to put a different u joint in to match the rear end. Before and after pics. Hope this helps ya.

Speedkills80 nailed it on the head. You must move the hole back about 6". The Saginaw shifter mount attaches where the tailhousing meets the maincase, while all others attach at the end of the tailhousing. Why? Because of the bench seat that came in the base cars with 3 speed manual. 4 speed Sags used the same set up. As you can see, in his car, buckets are now mandatory. See the transmission , it's a Sag, with both holes open. Muncie is the same lenghth, and the holes on that tailhousing are where your shifter will mount. You can't adapt the Sag linkage, that Sag in your car even has a flat sided tailhousing for the shifter mount to clear, even other Sags with the normal round tailhousing won't work. The 1-2 and 3-4 rods are similar, but the Muncie needs a unique rear gear shifter rod like the BW T-10 and ST-10 use that is short and severely bent.
