Im a soon to be high school senior and my car, a 1979 oldsmobile cutlass salon brougham, got passed through the family. I put a chevy 305 in it that had a knocking noise in it. My dad, uncle and i pulled the engine to find out that the number 8 rod bearing had been grooved through the layers of material and had grooved the crank. I bought a crank off my friend for $20 only to later figure that it is a scat stroker crank. What a deal right?? So we had it all cleaned up and it woke the engine up a lot. According to the mechanic that sold us the engine, its had a lot of head work done and its been bored and stroked with aluminum connecting rods and pistons. The rods and pistons are truely aluminum. I had 3.42's put in it and had the factory posi completely rebuilt for only $150. Had the th-350 completely rebuilt and threw in a b&m shift kit in it. It has a b&m ratchet shifter. Has no proble chirping tires going into both second and third. Not a bad first car if i say so.. but any opinions are welcome. I want all the feedback i can get

Nice! Thats a pretty rare car and normally I understand why no one has them but im not gonna lie that thing looks nice! If I had one I would have to shove a 455 Olds in there! Anymore pics? Its not everyday we see one of these.

Sharp car! I always like'd the 78-79 442's. The buttless cutlass. I'd have to have it Olds powered, but your 1st car & stroker engine you can't complain.

The car is very clean but I would personally change out the aluminum connecting rods for steel ones, they were never designed for street use a will fail at some point.
 
That's real clean. Nice! Not to many of them around.
So you put a stroker crank in a 305?
Didn't you have to change the pistons?
Or it was already stroked and had the right pistons

Put a stroker crank in it.. didnt change anything except crank and bearing

Let me see if I have this right that you put a Chevy 305 in your car only to find out it has a knocking noise.
Then you by a crank from a friend for $20 that just happens to be a Scat stroker crank.
Then you guys install the stroker crank in your 305 and it requires no modifications to do so because the mechanic that sold you
the engine (with a knock apparently) said it has had a lot of head work done and it has been bored and stroked and also has aluminum connecting rods.

So I am curious what you paid for this engine and what kind of car was it in previously since a stroker kit in a 305 would bring it up to a 335 cubic inches and to put a stroker kit in a 305 would be a costly and meticulous set up especially with aluminum rods.

We were told the engine came out of a 85 camaro. The guy built it twenty years ago when he was at a automotive machining school and couldnt remember everything. But yes. we put the crank in and didnt change a thing and the pistons dont hit or anything.

Solely in my opinion, that was one of the few 442 body styles that was more like beer than it was wine. It never got better with age. It was also one of the low-points in 442 history as far as engine choices. I tell myself if I try hard enough, I could one day forget 78-79 442s ever happened.

But with that said, it's lucky they didn't pull the plug entirely in the late 70s on any "performance option". Your car appears clean and it certainly is different. Not many survived this long and are not rusted out. Enjoy it!
