I plan on swapping the 200-4R in my 83 GP for a 5 speed setup out of a late 80's F-body, using as many original GM parts as possible, including the bellhousing. I am wondering what flywheel to use. I have a 383 stroker built with a factory 400 block. Will a stock replacment, 168 tooth flywheel clear this bell housing? Will it work with F-body clutch setups? If not, what will work with this engine/trans combo? Why didnt they just put 5 speeds in G-bodies? Any help is appriciated.

Do you mean you have a 383 stroker made with a 350 block and a 400 crank or do you mean a de-stroked 377 made with a 400 block and 350 crank?

Yes. MY goof. 350 block, 400 crank 383. Was thinking about my brothers 377 when I typed that!

 Hey we all do it. Sorry can't help you much on the flywheel. I just wanted anyone else that reads this to remember you will need an externally balanced flywheel, so you don't get the wrong info.

Well....some aftermarket 383 cranks are internally balanced. But if thats a Chevy 400 piece, than make sure you get an external balance flywheel like he said. As for flywheeel size, the larger 168 tooth billet flywheel in mine would NOT clear a stock Bell.

No, a 168 tooth flywheel will NOT fit a F body T-5 bellhousing, you need a special 153 tooth one with the 400 balance weights. I learned this the hard way when putting a 406 in a 1984 Camaro with a T-5. Also, plan on eating a fair share of T-5's as they are weak transmissions. Third gear is usually the first to go.

i wanted a t-5 also but was warned as well about the weakness check out the lakewood bellhousing i was told the 82-83 camaro/firebird would fit might fit the 168 th i would call lakewood and check another sugg get a sfi approved flywheel if the wallet can handle it i decided to run a muncie 4spd havent done so yet but its in the plan G/L

Thanks for the input. I know the T5 is weak and i will destroy it right away, but it is a budget thing, so i will be happy just to have a manual. Looking at better transmissions already, but they are way spendy! Liked the idea of the Lakewood bellhousing, but also spendy. I will probably upgrade parts in the future, but for now i just want to get everything converted so i can row my own gears and make my brothers super jealous 😀

That is one of the sites i have looked at to get ideas on the easiest way to do this swap. I liked their info.
