I was thinking about this today while I was delivering pizza. There are a lot of supposedly essential books out there that are frequently referenced in the culture and other places, but how many of us have read them and what are they? There are a few that come to my mind which are on my "To Read" list that I never quite seem to have time for. Here's my list, please post yours and any comments on the topic.
"A Brief History of Time"- Stephen Hawking
"1984"-George Orwell
"The Communist Manifesto"- Karl Marx
"The Elegant Universe"- Brian Greene
"A Brave New World"- Aldous Huxley
"Foxes Book of Martyrs"
"The Federalist Papers"-Various Authors (Thomas Jefferson being one)
"War and Peace"- Leo Tolstoy
"The Origin of the Species"- Charles Darwin
"The Art of War"- Sun Tzu
"The Prince"- Machiavelli
Please note about my list: Not all of them are books I have a philosophical alignment with (Especially not Marx or Darwin). Some are books I wish to read so that I can make more intelligent arguments against their fundamental principles rather than to agree with them.
