There is a part on my 84 GP that is just to the left of the alternator. It has a big hose coming from the air breather and a little vacuum hose, too. It also has electical connections to it. One of the hose broke off of it, it seems that there was something plastic it connected to, it is all melted and burnt. I assume it has something to do with the exhaust. What is it? I need to replace it.

you just described a number of parts, pics are definately needed. or you could buy a haynes manual and try to find it in there.

Checked the Haynes manual, can't find it. Could it be the diverter valve? Also, how many parts have a huge hose coming from the air filter, connected to it?

What motor is in your car?

Sounds like it's probably the air pump.

A picture would be nice to confirm that we're all thinking of the right thing.

Maybe the the hot air duct that goes from the exhaust manifold and air cleaner to heat it up when its cold..has a vacuum line and sensor on some models?

Sounds like part of the diverter valve assembly. If it is, there will be two electrical connectors, one black and one gray. There should also be a tab that goes under the alternator pivot bolt if it is the D valve.
