What size is my v6

Hi I got an 84 el Camino. How do I tell which v6 it is I was told could be 2.9,3.1,3.3. Any one help ?

What is the 8th character in the VIN? You probably have the 3.8LT (231 cu in) Buick V6, which should have a VIN code A.

The 8 th character is a9.

I'm no El Camino expert but a quick VIN decoder search turned up this:

9 = V-6, 229cid
A = V-6, 231cid
H = V-8, 305cid
N = V-8, 350cid diesel

GM called both the 229 and the 231, 3.8LT V6s. In your case, judging by the VIN code 9, you have the Chev 229 V6, which would be called a 3.8LT V6.

For 1984, The engine code 9 indicates a 3.8L V6 2 barrel carb, used and produced in division 1.
