A 3.8L will bolt up to a th200 or th200/4r. It is possible a stock 3.8 came with one, but not as likely as the other two

In 1983 I don't believe there were any 4.3 el caminos, but if it is a 4.3 the 3 speed would be a th350

Here's what you're looking for if you want to find a good th350 to go with a 3.8. - A buick/olds/pontiac bolt pattern that was originally on a v8 car. Or a universal bolt pattern from any original v8. th350's used larger clutch packs for v8 cars. You'll need a short tailshaft version, and also make sure it's an older non lock up type (no electrical, and it will last longer as the lock up converter generates more heat)

My 81 bu with the 3.8 had a 350 turbo so it could be that or a 200. Remeber if its a chevy so if it has a 3.8 its a good chance it has the chevy 3.8.
