Im going to install a transmission cooler soon and would like to lnow where/how do you install a temp guage never paid attention to any ports on the trans for temp sending units and can I install one with the trans still in? D.J.

Remove the transmission pan. The best way to avoid geting soaked is to remove the side bolts first; then the rear bolts; then the front bolts (now you'll start seeing fluid). Be sure to have a catch pan. Once the fluid is done pouring all over the place, carefully remove the pan. Pour the rest of the fluid into the catch pan but leave the catch pan under the transmission to catch the dripping from the valve body. Clean the pan.

Next is to drill a hole in the transmission pan. The hole needs to be somewhere on the pan where it will not interfere with any internal transmission parts. Clearances are pretty tight so be careful when making your selection. Once you drill the hole, screw in a proper size bung (the hex-side out). Test-fit the pan with the plug in place. If you don't have a welder find a welding shop to do this part because it's important. Get the bung brazed in place so that it won't move or leak.

Screw the temperature sender (use thread sealer) into the bung. Put the pan back on. Now wire up the sender and you're done.

Hope this helps.

JB weld.

yea i just threaded a hole into my transmission pan and screwed in the sender to it from the gauge. i dont know for sure if its the right way but i dont see anything wrong with it

i want to do the same thing with my 200-4r, but i was gonna somehow have the temp sensor in line from where the atf comes from the trans to the cooler so i dont have to put a hole in my pan.

That's definately not the right way to do it.
The pan alone doesn't provide enough contact on the surface of the threads to allow for a secure seal.
Be prepared for yours to leak or even fail.

Thanks all for the replies,Kiko them instructions were perfect,a child cuoldnt get them wrong, well when I do my shift kit install i will definitly be getting the bung welded in while the pans off...

You oughta buy a Aluminum transmission Pan with a port in it...... That's the CORRECT way to do it!!! JMO 8)

kind of a newbie question. Why not buy a transmission cooler and then "t" it off one of the transmission lines?
