Which oil should I go with

there's a big difference between 100,000 miles and 170,000 miles. 170,000 miles is nearing the end of the life with that motor (at least for all the g's I've owned) . Either way, if the motors has 170,000 miles I would use some regular el-cheapo 10w-30 dino oil and some lucasoil additive. For high mileage engines I use NuGold 10w-30, it's like 10 bucks for four litres. I change the oil at least once a month on high mileage engines, as soon as the oil starts to look dark at all. I also run an engine flush (usually that Wynn's engine flush) each time right before I change the oil.

If the motor is in great shape and relatively low km's, I use Mobil 1 10w-40, and change the oil once a month or so.

Mileage doesn't tell the whole story. Compression and blowby are what matters, as well as leaks. A tight leak-free motor I would stay with high quality synthetic. A shot, leaky pig I would buy whatever-is-on-sale and check the level often.

I agree with Mark. There's no sense throwing money away on premium oil if it's going into an oil burning/ leaking, one foot on the proverbial banana peel engine.
Run it on the cheap sh*t and top it off as needed.

Run your basic 10w30, add a can on RESTORE, and call it a day.
