Hey guys, about to install the th400 I got a few weeks ago and I'm needing a shifter to control it. I want a gate or ratchet shifter. I've been looking at the b&m pro stick and the hurst quarter stick shifters, they both seem to have alot of usage in the world and I wanted some of your experiences and opinions. The car is a 87 cutlass 5.3L turbo with a th400 transmission that is bone stock for now. The car is going to be used on the street and strip. I ultimately want kilduff lightening rods but they are not in the budget right now.

I have the b&m one in my cutlass and it works great but you really need to learn the shifter and know if you want that grear you are going to have to want it. Down side to this shifter plastic ball on top quite crap wish the lever was a little longer and maybe had some sort of rubber on it. You will also want rubber grommets mounted between the shifter and the body to reduce things vibrating loose but then again I probably should use loctite . Plus mounting this shifter in the cutlass is very easy with out a console

I've run both shifters that you mentioned, I like the B&M but both are good I would go with the shifter that is best priced. You can also check out a company American Shifters on the web, I have found there shifters very good quality and good price. I'm parcel to the B&M, because I use there transmission in several applications.

I like the ratchet shifters. Very nice when at strip since it can only go one gear at a time no matter what you do. I Use the B&M line.

I prefer B & M ratchet shifters since I have a full manual reverse valve body I have to shift up and down every gear and with the ratchet I pull back to shift and just bang it forward to downshift, but since you are ultimately planning on getting lightning rods I would just buy the least expensive shifter that will do the job until then.

I mean if I find something that I like better I may just keep them instead of the kilduff rods. Is a ratchet shifter compatable with a stock forward pattern auto vb th400? I don't the extra money to drop into the trans at this moment, just want to get the car going but still have it setup to where I won't need another shifter later. I know the b&m gate shifters have the different type of plates. Is that an issue with a th400 and auto vb?

Also guys thanks for the quick responses. I would have replied to them sooner but I had a wedding to go to yesterday and really no time to do anything for the race car lol. Keep the pics and ideas coming, they are very helpful.

I have the B & M Megashifter which I personally think it is a great shifter, my first trans was a forward automatic 400 turbo and the only thing I had to change was the shift indicator when I went with the reverse manual valve body trans.
I also prefer the t-handle knob it just feels more comfortable when you are constantly shifting.

I have tried the megashifter. My buddy has one in his caprice, very smooth shifter, but I'm not crazy about the t handle. My hand just doesn't like the feel of it. So I wont have any issue using a ratchet shifter with a auto vb?
