I have a strange whirring noise in the drivers side dash of my 85 Elky, thought it might be the blower fan but I shut that off. Oddly it sounds like its coming from directly behind my speedometer. My speedometer needle bounces a little, could it be the cable going out? The noise speeds up with RPMs. I looked behind the dash but can't see anything loose at all.

Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.

Yup, you nailed it! It's the speedo cable!

The bouncing gauge is usually the first sign, followed by the noise. It sure is annoying huh?

The cables dry out over time or they get a puncture and just fail.

Just go to any auto parts store and pick up a new one. Remember, if you have cruise control and you plan on keeping it, you have a 2 piece cable. They are different from each other. Regardless, I would remove your cable(s) and bring it with you to the store just so you know you are getting what you need on the first trip!

Good Luck!

I had the same problem. I dropped a little graphite on it and it silenced it for about a year. Then I upgraded the whole thing and went with a dakota digital dash....Strongly recommend it! a bit expensive though.
