looking at another forum and saw an interesting bit of info. a guy in the UAW was aying that workers at the toyota plants in the US have been approaching the UAW about membership. is this true? i don't know for sure but let's say it is. what do you think will happen? i know toyota just moved up to the "big 2" pushing back ford. personally i think that most of the trouble with GM ford and Mopar is the unions that demand tons of money and then take a bunch of 30min coffee breaks and don't pay attention to their work. it's like verizon around here. sure i see the trucks everywhere but the guy's always reading the newspaper. i have a friend who works for them and he makes alot of money, reading the newspaper. hell he gets a ton of overtime!
i figure that toyota will first counter with higher pay and benefits to keep the unions out. if the UAW gets in, quality will die and prices will go up.
what do you think?

I have friends who work at the Princeton, Indiana Toyota plant. Let me re-assure you that no one there is trying to unionize. They get paid so well and are taken care of so well that they don't need a union for protection (or extortion.)

On the contrary, union organizers are desperately trying to get IN to Toyota. They want in, but the Japs beat them at their own game.

If you take care of your workers, they don't need the unions.

THE NUMBER ONE REASON FOR OUTSOURCING IS UNION LABOR!!

Well, it would all depend on how stupid Toyota was in dealing with the unions. GM,Ford, Chrysler and AMC all made too many sweetheart deals in the 50's and 60's that they are paying for now. AMC was killed partially because of UAW woes (among other things). They basically felt that it was cheaper to keep things going than to deal with the problem immediately. After all, sales would ALWAYS grow, US automakers would NEVER get competition, etc. "What's good for GM is what's good for America" was the motto of the day as management went on with the blind faith that it would always be that way.

I have not heard of Toyota workers trying to unionize, but I feel that if they did Toyota would just move production out of the US. After all, it is not a US based company any more than Nissan, Hyundai, Subaru, BMW, Honda, etc are. They all just own factories here, and with the NAFTA corridor, it would be just as cheap if not cheaper to make their cars in Mexico and ship them here by truck or train. It's a global economy and the US workers must compete with global production and labor costs in order to keep their jobs. No one needs to manufacture products here and that is why many companies choose not to.

I frankly would buy a Toyota, Honda or Nissan before I would ever consider a new domestic brand car or truck. Part of that reason is that they do not use union labor and I do whatever I can to NOT support unionized workers and the Democratic candidates their dues go to support.

will the UAW kill Toyota

What a bunch a crap!!! Where do you live? The UNITED States of America!! All unions do is give one the power, strength, and backing of many. Do you think NYC could have handled 9/11 all by itself????? All 50 states helped and responded as ONE!!! Thats a UNION!!! All the corruption, sand bagging and lack of attention to detail was ALLOWED because the auto industry here thought their s--t didn't stink. 1970 thru 1990 badge engineered cars? Cimmaron? a Cavalier at twice the price!!! And on and and on.Camaro 1970-1981 same car 12 years in a row. Mustang 1979--1993 same car. NEED MORE???? Think about the big picture------ befor you repeat that propaganda about Unions ruining America. Unregulated Corporate GREED has killed the American Dream. Its over baby. Will the last one here with a real fulltime job turn out the lights when you're handed the pink slip.

unions are always demanding more money. but they perform less work. look at what i said about verizon unions. when i was doing fiber optic and data cable installs i worked a couple of union jobs. the union guys were always on break and we were always working. we ran coax, data, and telephone to 20 different rooms in 1 week. they ran electrical wiring to about 6 rooms in the same time.
plus unions force people to join or you can't work in some industries. so much for freedom. people should be allowed to work for the auto companies without joining the union. let's see how long the union lasts then. and how much money the companies save and then put into quality and new jobs. GM knows they have a quality problem, they don't have money to put into it. hell, look at GM in europe. they have the same drivetrains but fewer problems. the only differences...european vs US workers and union vs non-union.
the unions were created because there were no laws protecting their rights. now there is plenty of protection. we don't need them, they are leeches!
study history a little. unions are by there nature communistic. we've all seem that communism does not work.

Unions are one of the leading cuases of America losing money. Screw union labor. I dont want to be in a union and I sure as hell dont want to pay union dues. I know a few people that work on bridges in the summer who are union. They get paid $35/hour. All said it is the easiest job they have ever had. Lots of sitting around and waiting for something to come up.

Unions had a purpose once when corporations severely exploited their workers and there were few safety laws to protect them. That was many years ago. Today, they expect to get paid an amount of money for mindless assembly line work that many college educated people do not make. They support left wing political candidates that oppose my views on social and economic issues and I will not have my money spent to pay for their campaigns. I see them as the modern day incarnation of Marxism, and I cheer when I hear of union workers loosing their jobs to non union workers-even if those jobs go outside the country. I live in a right-to-work state and would not want to live where bloated union labor prices make things too expensive for me to live. If the UAW would agree to the 60% pay cut they should get, I may change my mind. But for now, I will continue to do whatever I can to keep any union workers from getting my money.

I will also say that I never stated that unions were solely responsible for the problems with the US auto industry. Poor quality, poor engineering, ugly products, and a lack of good innovations have all been contributing factors as well. The fact that none of them can build a consistently good basic cheap car with a 300k mile reputation speaks volumes. The Japanese can, and with quality that domestic brands are just now starting to approach. Unfortunately, GM does not want to build a good looking entry model car. Look at the Cobalt. Better interior than a Cavalier? Sure-but if that is where you set the bar, you are setting it too low. No matter what they call it, it still looks like a Cavalier with new nose and tail sections. Compare it to a new Honda Civic Coupe and it is apparent who has the better styling department. The Ecotec engine is a HUGE improvement over the old 1982 pushrod 4 (with a new head design in 1987) it used to have, but really is only about as good as a mid 90's Japanese design. It could be much more efficient and should make better power with all that displacement-N/A. I think it's a 2.2 liter and only makes 140hp. Nissan made that in 1991 with a 2 liter in the Sentra SE-R. Honda made 160 hp with Variable Valve Lift in the 1993 Civic Del Sol VTEC- and that was a 1.6!. So, I am not impressed. GM needs to move away from building a Buick for everyone ( Bland, inoffensive transportation modules that neither impress or offend) and needs to be more successful in marketing to individual segments rather than worrying about competition with itself.

I am about as anti-union as it gets, I have TWO jobs and would rather do that than work for a communist labor union. Ditto the union dues supporting democrats, that really pisses me off.

Unions are the reasons that factories move away. You better wake up and see that. No one is going to pay 2 thousand dollars for a refrigerator from Michigan that can be sold for 200 if it's made in Mexico. That's why the big plant closed there and the others are following.

I specifically chose the company I work for because it is non-union. I have to get a second job as well, until my college work is done. That is life, and life is not fair.

FAIR IS FOR COMMUNISTS. The rest of us work hard for what we want.

If you just want things given to you, vote democrat. That's their platform. Oh, and the American Communist Party has endorsed Hillary. Go figure.

If Toyota or Honda or anyone else goes union here that is not, it will be the end for them. Hopefully they stay smart.

Well, Hillary comes pretty close to what Carl Marx believed and wrote in "The Communist Manifesto". The funny thing is, all these environmentalists support all of this socialism and state control, but the countries with the worst environmental record are all Communist states. The Soviet Union, China, etc. all exploited their natural resources and people in the name of the state. Free market economies are more careful because market forces dictate against it. Free speech educates people and they can then make more informed decisions.
