I don't believe my car (88 MCSS) has these springs on the window crank....maybe removed at some point? Should they be there? If so, where should they be located?.....do the seat up against the grey plastic washer?

Thanks for any info.

Those springs go behind the door panels to push the door panel tight against that gray washer and the window crank.

I've seen several vendors that seem to indicate they belong. Here is a link: https://www.dixierestorationdepot.com/Product/Detail.aspx?s=DM30037&d=177

They have been used on many GM models over the years & venders do get some incorrect info based on the supplier info like fits like 19xx to 19xx fits A, B, F cars & trucks & vans but clumps all together.
Now in my GM-Chevy '76-'81 & '82-'90 parts catalogs do not list a spring for '78-'88 A/G models. Same in my GM-Pontiac '76-'81 parts catalog.

My 61 Oldsmobile had them on the wing window (Vent) cranks only, while my 69 Skylark had them on all the window cranks. None of the 73-88 GM cars we have had or still have came with the springs.

They were a mainstay of the old GM vehicles, although they weren't used in every model after they started going to molded and split door panels. The spring in question was GM p/n 4078002. The Olds parts book only called out for them from 86-88 G without YT1 (Salon door panels) and power windows (duh). The retainer spring for the handle was p/n 4168122.

Yet, the Monte Carlo does not seem to use the spring...according to parts info.

In the "old days" the door panels were one huge flat panel of vinyl-covered cardboard, normally only clipped along the side edges and with screws at the bottom as well as fasteners to hold on the peripheal junk like arm rests and stuff. But the area around the door window cranks did not have much support. Thus, there could be an unsightly gap. To remove such gap, a lightweight spring was used to keep the panel up to the back of the window crank. Same with vent windows on those equipped. Usually conical springs, but some early 60s versions were not. There was a straight version under GM p/n 4566746.

This is the ones I'm used to seeing on the 60s/70s era cars.
