It's still legal in 44 states to harvest cats and dogs for their meat for human consumption. But not after the Farm Bill 2018 is expected to be signed into law soon. Then it will make it illegal to import/export or slaughter dogs and cats for a food source. Rats on the other hand.... 🤔 🙂

There was a chinese family around the corner from my parents when I was a teenager. The alley we used to get to the gas station was next to their yard/garage. No joke, we would go by and the yard would be full of puppies, pigeons in cages, etc....next thing you'd hear bad noises late at night and the animals would be gone!!!! A couple days later there would be a fresh "supply".

We found out they owned a local buffet style place, and eventually was exposed for using meat that wasn't chicken.

Hate to ruin it for you but shrimp is not a good alternative. Most shrimp in the US is from farms in undeveloped Asian countries. Google "Shrimp's Dirty Secrets" if you never want to eat it again. I love the taste of shrimp but I won't eat it anymore unless I know exactly where it came from.
