My car came with the 200 metric. I am putting in a 200-4r. will the cable work or is it too short/long?
Thanks!
Thanks!
wow...thats quite a difference in length. So my cable will be too long....uuggggggggg ...Next question...how much of a pain in the rear is taking off the console to get to this cable? .... I guess I should just change the shifter too while im at it so I can use the first gear.G-Body_Vet said:I did a quick part number comparison and this is what I got:
'87 SS, '85 GP Brougham, 305 powered w/ 200-4R ATP #Y239 27.25"
'85 Olds Salon, 307, 200-4R ATP #Y651 26.15"
TH200/TH350 ATP #Y116 29.75"
Thanks for the research...G-Body_Vet said:I did a quick part number comparison and this is what I got:

good...but heres another problem..if I change cables, will the shifter have to be changed too or will the 3speed shifter do the job with the diff cable length? Im looking for a 4speed shifter, but I may not be able to find one quickly.G-Body_Vet said:bill said:Thanks for the research...
No problem. Pulling the console isn't that bad of a job either.
ok...just so I understand, ur saying a 3speed shifter wont work at all? or are you saying it wont work like a 4speed one would? Ive heard varying opinions on whether this setup will work or not. I expect it not to shift into low gear because it was not made for 4 selections. But it should go from park to reverse to neutral and to drive, right?JBreu said:Even if you change cable lengths, that wouldn't affect the shifter. Those adjustmenst can be made underside of the car..However a stock three speed shifter will not work. You will have to fund a shifter from a G bOdy car that had the O/D. I went with a B & M Pro-Stcik with the 4 speed gate plate when I switched to the O/D transmission..
Why would you go through all that and not have your 1st gear??? YOu could use your existing 3 speed shifter and not be able to use the 1st gear...Doesn't make sense though, but you should be ok I think...bill said:ok...just so I understand, ur saying a 3speed shifter wont work at all? or are you saying it wont work like a 4speed one would? Oh I agree that its not logical, but my main reason for using the 2004r is mileage and less rpms on the engine at 75mph. I dont plan on racing the car so I would rarely use the shifter manually anyway. I plan to get a later model console plate that looks right for a 4speed trans, but its not in the budget and I dont want to have to change anything out that I dont need at this point. If I can find a 4speed console shifter then I will install it, but they are getting very rare these days. Havent seen any on ebay and I dont have any junk yards nearby. So I am stuck with what I got for now. I could go with the B&M but Im trying to keep it stock in appearance as much as possible.JBreu said:Why would you go through all that and not have your 1st gear???
