Will a 17x9.5 work on the rear of my 79 monte and what is the biggest tire i can use without any fabrication?

Yes, with the proper backspacing. A 275/40/17 will fit although you may need to trim the wheel lip fold a bit - there's plenty of material there to do it.

I run 17x9.5 with 275's and have no problem since I got polyurethane body mounts. I have 1-inch lowered springs in the rear and also put 300lbs in the trunk one time and still didn't have any trouble.
