Also, I gave my 305/TH350 combo away so yes, you can still get those for free.

Sold my TH350 for $150 as a core and sent the 267 with it...guy said he was robbing me of $20 for the iron. I told him I was giving him $20 worth of scrap iron for doing me the favor of not having to haul it myself

How much more is a 4 bolt engine worth, vs 2 bolt? How much do SBChevy v8's go for these days, say, something from the 60's or 70's?
that's a loaded ?, depends upon how much hp you lookin to go with if 2 or 4 bolt. if ya junkyardin for a sbc, should be cheap either way cuz they plentiful. 2 bolt can easily grab 300hp outta 1 (someome else may say otherwise maybe higher) and obviosly 4 bolt can go more. imo if gonna grab a used SBC look for 86 & above cuz they dont have the pesky 2 pc rear main seals. the squarebody truck of that era you can be assured are 4 bolts.

as a side note in 21' i bought this engine for my car which is a reproduction of the era i mention that started in summer 20' for $2900 and i didnt know was on sale long block, difference between this & the orig 87-95 is having a hole for mechanical fuel pump provisions. the oldies didnt or maybe some did. its a crime that a long block sbc goes for this much now and thats who i bought from.

theres 3 they came out with the lo5-k bein only 1 flat tappet hydrolic cam & mech fuel pump eccentric but full ready for roller cam.

heres the article to go long with. https://www.musclecarsandtrucks.com/new-gm-350-v8-crate-engine-for-work-trucks/

All OEM 305 truck and van of that era are 305 HO ... Same spec as SS Monte Carlo, 416 or 601 heads usually the 677 or 777 block. Plus 850 Q Jet, but lean ported for unleaded gas. Just something to look for when boonie hoppin through the salvage yard. Most of the ones that blew were replaced with Mr Goodwrench 350s "Hencho El Mexico" (Made in Mexico) and will be the base 290 HP build with 624 heads (usually) and 4 Bolt mains.

Early 80s to about 86 (some 87), 2 piece seal, block # 201 to 203. Webbing will accept 4 bolt main conversion, later ones... Iffy at best. It is Best to look for 201 to 203 and or 677 blocks with 416 or 601 heads.

The "typical" head is 1.72 intake, the HO are 1.94 intakes, although possible to find with 1.84 intakes. Doesn't really matter most 305 fall on their face 3500 to 4500 RPM.

Typical stock 305 the most you want is .488 lift, they do better with more duration than more lift. When you start getting into deep in pocket 350 is better choice. But you can still make nice cruiser with keeping on budget... Just don't get to stupid, you start hitting diminished returns very quickly on a stock 305.

On the 350 880 Blocks, they don't come pre-referenced that I'm aware of. Maybe the later ones were? In Phoenix one of the best known shops for the 383 prep was about $800 each and that was about 5 years ago. I was there this past January but not the topic, so not sure of current price.

On the dogbone stuff above .550... Stock would be true, but sounds like incorrect roller lifters were used.

On the SBC High RPM you keep the lifter under spring pressure separate from the valve spring. I'll find photo of this and post.
I did a lot of the 880 casting and all were pre cast with clearance for the rod bolts. I always just did a little clean up before with a dye grinder just to be sure before cleaning the block. I wanted to have it ready the first time. I also used the balanced Eagle Kits so they all came with after market rods, so the rod bolt clearance was there already. Back a few years ago I just oreder the standard bore kits with flat tops. Most of the 880 vortec blocks still had the cross hatch when I took them apart with 200.000 miles. I would just barrel hone with a brusch pull the galley pllugs and super clean and install the kits. Back then I was getting the kits form Compition Products for around $850. complete for the one piece seal blocks. Things might have gone up a little???? since then. Look up or call Competition Products 1-800-233-0199 you can also look it up on line or get a catalog sent. Free shipping but its 100lbs at your door. Complete with everything crank rods pistons rings bearings and balancer if needed. You need a clean block and new cam bearings. And you can say I DID IT MYSELF. Or have a friend help or a good book and read it.

Ok good to know. The 880 blocks I went through were not. Some were CFD I wonder if it were different years.

On Q Jet I was told 850 on the trucks never measured. On the GMC 4.3 V6 mini vans prior to TBI or Vortec they had the larger secondaries, but never measured. Usually with in first 6 months of warranty the van would be back. Solution was to knock the caps off turn the mix screws out about 1 turn and put back on. Fixed the poor running.

I was later told about the vans. The first I went through was an 84 G20, abandoned so no title, pulled engine... and was the HO 305 with 601 heads 1.94/1.5 and 700R. Gave the 700R to a customer for his 56 Chevy. Engine cleaned and painted, put chrome dress up, headers and Holley on top and put on display in Tucson shop. It's still there today.

It was later when talked with older engine builder, and then older Sprint builder out of Kansas, both told me the same...305 HOs were used for trucks and vans G10, G20, G30 Chevy and GMC.

Figure worse comes to worse, you could save the hasle of looking for that hard to find engine block by going with a crate engine from blueprint engines.

Very cost affective for what you get(new everything w/4bolt mains) versus the time spent looking for used parts and peicing it together and costing you more in the long run after all is said and done from all the machine shop work.
