There is a screw/bolt that goes behind the ash tray that secures the console to the floor. Or I should say that there is one on my 84 SS. The '86 Regal in my garage does not have it. And my son's 80' Cutlass Supreme did not have it. I'll assume that its a center console only piece.

Pretty sure they were only on the Chevy with the breadbox.
I guess the El Camino bucket/console setup is unique among G-body? I could not even find any reference to a console in the factory shop manual.

El Camino used the same console as the Malibu and Monte Carlo. Cubby up front referred to as the breadbox, had an ashtray and small storage and was used until 85 the 86 and up got a coin tray to replace the breadbox.

And from the 81 Camino dealer brochure...top left of picture.

It would of been used with Chevy & GMC A/G's for '78-'81 with automatic transmission & '84-'85 for the bread box to be secured to the floor. In '86 th coin tray replaced it. Please note '82 & '83 didn't have a bucket seat option for any of the Chevy's or GMC, '78-81 manual Chevy's, GMC & Pontiacs used the same console but didn't use the bread box or bracket as the shifter was in that spot.

What are you going to do with the hole in the floor for the shift cable?

wow, thanks for the info. I have owned a split-bench 85 Conquista for years but never saw a bucket seat El Camino until I bought an 85 project car last year. The project was missing the front of the console, and I never saw the bracket until I removed the old carpet.

Now I can't get the image of the "breadbox" out of my head. They seem impossible to find at a reasonable cost, and I have not seen reproductions. So for now the bracket stays put and I will cit the new carpet around it.

When I figure out the shifter/trans/cable setrup the hole will house the shifter cable. I have a stock console/floor shifter going to a built 700R4 turning a 3.70 Currie 9-inch powered by a built 454. Gonna be fun soon
