Great question. I honestly believe I could have gone 305 which is 10mm or 4/10ths of an inch larger. I can put my finger between tire and frame and between tire and fenders. Let's say my finger is half an inch. Even with 3/8ths that would give me 3/4 an inch total space. Not enough for a 315. 305 max for me.
There are a couple of guys that have managed to fit a 315. I don't know how, my wheel wells couldn't fit a tire that wide with no frame
